G2G Communities CIC

Welcome Reader to our May, 2017 Issue of the G2G Communities CIC Newsletter

Crest Award Centre

G2G Communities CIC is now a CREST Centre and will be piloting one of the awards with pupils from Christchurch CP School after half term. All of the awards, Discovery, Bronze, Silver and Gold will be offered to Home Educators and Schools as of September 2017.

In the 30 years that CREST Awards have been running, they have learnt a lot about the benefits they offer – to teachers, technicians, STEM Ambassadors, parents and home educators, as well as to students.

• Improved GCSE grades and increased interest in continuing in STEM education and careers

• A sense of achievement for students of all ages and abilities

• Real-life experience of ‘being’ a scientist and working on STEM projects

• Students can use CREST to enhance their UCAS personal statements – our scheme is well-regarded by universities

• Extra value from other activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, STEM Clubs, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the Children’s University Passport to Learning

We're Closed for Half Term

Over the half term our team is having a small well deserved break, so will be officially closed. However, some of our more dedicated staff we will still be working to get our 3D Printing Centre up and running. You can contact us by e-mailing info@g2gcommunities.org and will get back to you as soon as possible - if you're on holiday, have a great break!

Reaching Wider Partnership

Parents and children from six Schools in North Wales are enjoying visits to Conwy, Denbigh and Caernarfon Castles during May to July 2017. The project has been funded by the North and Mid Wales and North East Wales ‘Reaching Wider’ partnership. The Schools taking part in the programme are Ysgol Merllyn; Ysgol Gwynedd; ID Hooson; Ysgol Cystemnin; Ysgol Glanwydden; Ysgol Maesincla.

Over 72 pupils plus their parents will enjoy a day out visiting one of the Castles and then have the opportunity to undertake the following activities:

• Researching ancient monuments, castles, history and Welsh culture

• Visiting the monument/castle and building scale models in LEGO

• Creating time-lapse video’s and photographs of the build and the completed monument/castle

• Creating a ‘story board’ using the I pad and various applications related to the history of the castle/monument

• Recording the stories using digital animation using the I pad, LEGO Moviemaker and other story applications

• Using MinecraftEdu or LEGO World to explore and create a 'virtual world' of the castle/monument (the output from this can be used in Schools/Community venues in the future)

• Making a multimedia record/diary of the visit/s using the I pad or Windows Moviemaker

• Setting up a project Facebook and Twitter site to showcase the outcomes from the programme
