Exploring Historic Heritage with Cadw & Welsh Government

We have been working with Schools across North Wales to provide castle tours and exciting activities. Primary school pupils have visited the castles of King Edward I, namely Conwy, Caernarfon, Rhuddlan and Denbigh, and had the opportunity to create these out of LEGO Education while learning about life inside a 13th century castle.

In partnership with CADW we have been piloting a project to incorporate Welsh History, Technology and LEGO. The pilot has been mapped to the Welsh Digital Competence Framework. Two Schools have completed the project and another will take place in September 2017.

Rhyl High School Partnership

During 2017 we have been working in partnership with Rhyl High School to pilot the delivery of alternative curriculum activities to pupils. Some of the sessions were delivered in the School and at G2G Communities CIC in Rhyl to year 10 pupils. The year 10 pupils not only had the chance to have hands on IT and programming experiences but also gained a range of industry recognised qualifications, including those from Agored Cymru, City and Guild and the British Computer Society. The project is set to continue after the summer holidays and more activities and programmes are being planned.

MP Chris Ruane Visit

It was great to receive a visit on Friday 28th from the Vale of Clwyd MP and shadow Wales Office Minister Chris Ruane. As a former Deputy Head Chris has always been interested in the work of G2G Communities CIC and had the opportunity of talking to our staff and young people attending the Minecraft Edu club. Chris also had the opportunity to see the 3D printing centre to be launched in October and officially opened in November 2017.

Director Mrs Moira Lockitt said ‘We are extremely pleased to have the support of our MP; AM; Rhyl Town Council and Denbighshire County Council as they recognise the work being undertaken by G2G Communities CIC, the contribution it makes to communities across North Wales and having LEGO Education as part of their commercial offer in Denbighshire’.

Joined by Rhys from Rhyl High School for Work Experience

We've been extremely pleased to have Rhys, from Rhyl High School, on his two week work experience placement. During his placement Rhys has had the opportunity to support the Minecraft Edu sessions and he has also played a part behind the scenes of developing the Minecraft workshop ready for the holiday clubs. During his placement Rhys has had the opportunity to access other aspects of what we offer including supporting year 8 pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Llanwrst in preparation for the LEGO robotics competition which will be held in the OpTic Centre in March 2018.

Moira Lockitt (Director) said ‘I feel Rhys experience has given him the opportunity to understand the world of work from a different angle and wish him all the very best for his studies in year 11’. ‘Rhys has been extremely helpful during his placement and given us a number of things to think about with regard to developing Minecraft Edu activities’. ‘We were so impressed with Rhys that we have arranged for him to come in during the School holidays and help us put together some of his ideas’.

3D Printing Workshops - Coming Soon!

We are nearly ready to enter phase 2 in our project, we'll be increasing how many printers we have available in the Centre, working on the design software and educational materials.

What is 3D Printing? It's basically like having a computer guided mastic gun, the item you are making/printing is produced by laying down a continuous line of melted material, each time you complete a layer the printer lays down the next layer on top to produce the part you want to make/print.

Practical Implications. There are thousands of practical uses for having your own 3D Printer, such as printing replacement parts for household items; print a model of your favourite animal or if you are a model maker or you fly drones/model planes you could print your own replacement parts.

Future of 3D Printing. It's making big inroads into everyday production of parts in industry, spare parts will no longer have to be shipped around the world, you just print off your own, saving time and money. Soon 3D printers will be as common as copiers and printers and laptops, which is why we are investing in this technology now, today's youngsters are tomorrows engineering innovators.

All SySTEMs Go’ Competition Team Visiting Schools

Our LEGO Robotics Team have begun to visit Schools taking part in the ‘All SySTEMs Go’ competition, to be held in the OpTic Centre, in March 2018. All the Schools entered for the competition will receive a one day visit from the team, starting again in September 2017.

The ‘All SySTEMs Go’ project has been funded by the Welsh Governments National Science Academy (NSA).

Our School visits give students a taster of programming rovers. This will help Schools choose who they will enter into the competition in 2018. 32 Learners took part and we all enjoyed seeing what programs we could make.
